ABOUT

The Museum of Modern Ceramics SG (MOMC-SG) houses a private collection of Japanese ceramics and works from outside Japan that have affinities with Japanese aesthetics, particularly the concept of wabi-sabi (the appreciation of beauty in the modest, the imperfect and the impermanent).

The collection covers the period from the early 17th century to the present time, undoubtedly the most fertile period in Japanese ceramic history. Some 200 objects are showcased (and growing!). They include tea bowls (chawan), tea cups (yunomi), sake cups (guinomi) and related utensils, various forms of vessels, and contemporary sculptures made for art’s sake. The styles of these objects range from traditional ware that embody the spare aesthetics prized by traditional tea masters to contemporary works that can stand side by side with modern Western abstract art. Some of Japan’s finest ceramic artists are represented in the collection, including early Raku potters, Living National Treasures and artists designated as Intangible Cultural Property for excellence in their craftsmanship, not forgetting young emerging artists, many of whom are pushing the boundaries with innovative expressions and techniques.

I hope you will enjoy looking at all the works as much as I have enjoyed collecting and curating them.
